Notes on Gift Aid
|
Gift Aid is the scheme which allows UK charities to reclaim the tax paid by their supporters on money given to the charity. This means that “Gift Aiding” your donation makes it worth an extra 25p for every £1 donated for basic rate taxpayers. In order to qualify for Gift Aid, what you pay in UK income tax or capital gains tax must at least equal the amount Cord will claim in the tax year. If you want to “Gift Aid” your donations to Cord, just tick the box on the online donation form when you give, tell us over the phone or fill in the Online Gift Aid Declaration. Once you've made a Gift Aid declaration, it will remain in place until you tell us otherwise. It is also possible for Cord to reclaim tax on past donations (up to 4 years ago) before you made your declaration. If you think have given to Cord prior to completing a Gift Aid Declaration, and your tax status has changed during that period, please contact us for advice.
Change in circumstancesIf you've “Gift Aided” donations to Cord and you stop paying tax, please let us know as soon as possible as you may be liable for any claims made to the Inland Revenue. Please also let us know if you change your address, or name - you can use the Online Gift Aid Declaration.
Higher rate taxpayersIf you pay higher rate tax you can claim the difference between the higher rate tax of 40% or 50% and the basic rate tax of 20% on the total value of your donation to Cord. If you pay pay tax at 40% and donate £100 it is worth £125 to the charity but will only cost you £75 as you can claim £25. If you pay pay tax at 50% and donate £100 it is worth £125 to the charity but will only cost you £62.50 as you can claim £37.50. You can do this through your self assessment form, Tax Review form or contact your local tax office.
Tax refundsYou can donating tax refunds to charity through your tax return. If you complete a tax return and are due a refund you can ask HMRC to treat all/or part of it as a Gift Aid donation. To do this you need to enter Cord's charity reference code on the "Giving your tax repayment to charity" form that comes with your tax return. Cord's charity code is DAL76VG.
Cord Gift Aid statementIf required, Cord can give you a statement of donations, detailing the tax we have reclaimed during a tax-year. This can be a useful document if your tax returns are done by self-assessment or if applying for tax credits such as child tax credit. To request a statement, please contact us. |
