Citizenship


  • Living in a diverse world
    • People - How are we the same and how are we different?
    • What are different places like – exploring what life is like in another type of community, e.g. refugees returning to their village in Burundi.
  • Human Rights
    • What are our basic human rights?
    • What happens when human rights are denied – exploring this in the light of situations around the world, particularly areas of conflict
    • How do people become refugees? What might their experience be? Examples from a refugee camp in Chad.
  • Why is it so difficult to keep the peace in the world today?
    • Studying a contemporary conflict in the context of its historical background, e.g. the conflict in Darfur.
    • What is the fighting about? What is happening to the people involved in the conflict?
    • How might an international peace-building organisation such as Cord contribute to the peace process?
  • How do we deal with conflict?
    • Exploring concepts of forgiveness, justice and reconciliation in the context of conflict resolution – examples of Cord’s peace-building programmes (between abducted child soldiers and their aggressors in Northern Uganda).

    • What might it be like to live there – daily life, family life, housing, cooking, going to school?

    • Hot places.
    • What is the place like? Terrain? Vegetation?
    • How does the weather affect what people do?
  • Development of knowledge about places and locations
    • Are there any links in your school with this place?
    • Have children read any stories set in this place?
    • What are the similarities and differences between this place and your local area?
    • Is this place mentioned in the news? On television?
    • How can you use sources such as photographs, DVDs and the internet to learn more about this place?

History


  • Conflict in the 20th century:
    • What are the main features of conflicts in Africa (Rwanda, Uganda, Sudan and Burundi) and Asia (Cambodia and Vietnam) during the late 20th and early 21st centuries?
    • What impact have these conflicts had on life in these countries?
