Staunch CORD supporters the US Book Wish Foundation have met with CORD staff as part of their visit to Britain and the London Book Fair. Foundation President Logan Kleinwaks and Vice President Lorraine Kleinwaks spent three days in the capital, meeting with publishers and distributors about their innovative fund raising projects which will support CORD’s education and literacy programmes in Chad.
They incorporated a visit to Leamington Spa and CORD’s UK headquarters to discuss libraries, solar lighting, and school supply needs which are vital to our work with 35,000 young Sudanese refugees from Darfur. The Foundation is also keen to support our work with local Chadian villagers, who are themselves impoverished and lacking any formal education. Since its inception the Book Wish Foundation has been instrumental in funding and sourcing quantities of Headway English text books, reading glasses, solar lamps and other supplies for our Chad camp schools– thanks to the generosity of numerous US companies, youth groups and the general public. They have also facilitated a talk on peace building at the US Library of Congress for CORD Chief Executive Brian Wakley, which he gave during his trip to the States earlier this year. ‘CORD’s Chad programme reaches some of the world’s neediest readers,’ said Logan Kleinwaks, ‘a perfect fit for Book Wish’s mission to provide reading relief for people in crisis. The benefits that we in the developed world enjoy from reading, whether educational or psychological, are even more precious in desperate places such as Chad.’ http://www.bookwish.org |
