Cord, along with other UK relief, development and peacebuilding organisations, is urging the UK government to "be accountable to the poor and marginalised rather than to abusive governments.” Cord has signed up to the UK Aid Network (UKAN) statement “Aid effectiveness in contexts of poor governance, conflict and fragility”, with many other leading charities. The statement has been published this month ahead of the Fourth High Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness which will be held in Busan, Korea in November. At the Forum government ministers from across the globe, civil society organisations and private sector representatives will review global progress in improving the impact and value for money of development aid. Delegates will meet at the Forum to make new commitments to further ensure that aid helps reduce poverty and supports progress in meeting the Millennium Development Goals. Cord’s Chief Executive Brian Wakley said “The statement reminds the UK government to stand firm at the Forum and be advocates for aid which needs to be designed primarily to meet the needs and aspirations of people living in developing countries rather than the self-interest (e.g. trade, migration or national security) of donor countries." |
