As someone who has campaigned on human rights for many years, I have seen how the work of organisations such as Cord makes a huge difference to people's lives, above all by their direct action in helping those caught up in areas of conflict and humanitarian disaster. Also incredibly important is their raising awareness internationally, letting governments directly involved know that the outside world is watching.

In particular, Cord's work in Chad with refugees from the Darfur conflict with disabled and vulnerable children, as well as on women's rights, child sex slaves, HIV/Aids and gender based violence is fulfilling a vital role in the most difficult of circumstances.

Liz Lynne is the Liberal Democrat Member of the European Parliament for the West Midlands region. She is Vice-President of the Employment and Social Affairs Committee and is a member of the Development Committee and Human Rights Subcommittee.
