Education

Education is seen by many of those CORD work alongside as the key to freedom.  Freedom from the vicious circle of poverty and conflict that has had such a devastating impact on their lives.

Alongside our programmes of helping people to earn a living, education is a vital component of our work, from pre and primary school level through to adult literacy and even to preparing some for entrance to university.

In this CORD is committed to the Millennium Development Goals 2 and 3, to achieve universal primary education and promote gender equality and empower women.

For children and young people living in refugee camps schooling provides an essential and welcome structure to their day. It offers routine and stability, alongside a sense of belonging that is vital for a generation that have lost their homes, their belongings and often their family.

For those refugees who enjoyed school back home, this is a chance to catch up on the years they missed because of the turmoil of conflict.  For those returning home after years in exile, it offers a fresh start in rebuilding their young lives.

For others, it is their first opportunity to learn, an exciting challenge which they grasp eagerly.
