Chad: Abdullah Mohammed Hussein
Treguine Refugee CampAbdullah Mohammed Hussein was shot whilst escaping with his wife, her sister and his mother in law from his village in Darfur in 2004.
Mohammed joined Cord's education and teacher-training programme, and today he teaches Maths and Arabic to young refugees in the camp. He has a skill which he uses to bring hope to others and which gives meaning and value to his life. When he does finally return home, after the conflict is over, being able to teach will help to find work so that he can provide for his family. In the meantime, demand for schooling in Treguine is so great that these children are prepared to sit in 45 degree heat, in the sand, whilst others have lessons in shifts in basic classrooms. Teachers like Mohammed trained by Cord have been recognised as amongst the best operating in the region. A survey amongst agencies operating in the war torn country found that some 30% of the top 100 teachers working in 12 camps were from Bredjing, Treguine and Gaga, where Cord is responsible for education throughout 19 schools. |
