Host Communities
an example from Eastern ChadCORD recognises that life for the Chadian villagers living near to our refugee camps can be equally bleak. Chad itself is one of the world’s poorest countries, these villages have been under relentless attack from rebel groups, and resentment for the help given to the Sudanese refugees in their midst could all too easily erupt into conflict. Already we employ national Chadian staff as an integral part of our team in the refugee camps. We are determined to further build peace and understanding by bolstering our education programme across 19 village primary schools catering for over 3,200 children. Parents Associations in the villages will be given training on management and leadership. The village mothers’ associations have already received training in nutrition and health and support for their pre school children. CORD will develop a sports programme – and encourage monthly sporting activities between the Chadian schoolchildren and the refugee children in Bredjing & Treguine camps , so promoting a better understanding between the two communities. |
