Cord's Christmas 2018 appeal Donate Fundraise Peaceful relationships are powerful. Cord helped Thiri and her mother to live again, free from abuse. This was only possible because Cord brought the right people together. Thiri is just 13... When her father died, her mother remarried and her stepfather started to abuse her over a period of several years. Distraught and despairing, Thiri reached out to Cord and our partners in Northern Myanmar.Given long-held cultural traditions, the local police were reluctant to intervene. By speaking out, the risk of a backlash from the local community was very high.Thiri’s mother knew this had to be stopped and Cord gave her the glimmer of hope she needed. The first step was to bring local representatives together – community leaders, women’s groups – to build their confidence around the law, and to speak as one. Then, Cord’s partners brought the police to the area to collect evidence and provided secure shelter for them both.Thiri’s case was taken seriously by the authorities. Nearly a year on and her stepfather has received a 20-year prison sentence – a punishment almost unheard of in Myanmar. As Thiri’s mother told us, “I am so thankful for your help – if not we would not be able to be free like this.”Promoting the power of peaceful relationships is so important — it is the key to unlocking justice, peace, and securing basic services for all.
