Chris Gillman, 34, from Farnborough will compete in his first ever marathon this year and hopes to raise over £3,000 for Cord.

Chris only started running 3 years ago but is all set for the London Marathon in October this year.

“I started running in September 2017 after a colleague encouraged me to come along to our local Parkrun. Since then I have completed 78 Parkruns, 7 10k races and 1 half marathon. London will be my first marathon and I’m hugely looking forward to it! I am most looking forward to the buzz at the start line with thousands of other runners, spectators and the adrenaline of running with everyone during the race. I’m looking forward to getting a ‘runners high’ of running around Buckingham Palace and down the Mall to cross the finish line to collect my medal!

I’m most nervous about struggling during the race. I have been putting in the training and the longest run I have achieved to date has been 19 miles which I have achieved twice. I am just hoping that with prayer, running with thousands of others and the huge lift from the crowd that I will be able to carry on and achieve the distance required.

Lockdown hasn’t affected my training too much. I’m working at home 3 days a week so it’s been good to get out and about for my 1 hour of daily exercise. It’s been the hot weather that has impacted on my training the most.

I first heard about Cord during 2018. I am a member of the mission committee at St Peter’s Church in Farnborough which started supporting Cord financially in 2019. Cord’s ability to meet local people and communities to build relationships between them and their government to resolve issues is truly inspirational.”

Chris hopes to complete the marathon within 5 hours “Once I finish the marathon, have collected my medal, met family and friends and had a few photos taken I hope I’ll be able to enjoy a beer in one of London’s finest pubs, but I’ll have to wait and see how I feel!”
