Chris' Marathon Success Sadly the London Marathon could not take place this year. However, Chris did not let that stop him! He ran the virtual London Marathon and raised an amazing £2,861 for Cord. He tells us of his experience... When I approached the finishing line I looked ahead and noticed my family had a finishing ribbon and a couple of balloons to celebrate my achievement. It felt wonderful knowing that I had successfully completed my first marathon and I was still standing and walking! My legs were very tired and were seizing up fast. I was very pleased with achieving a time of 4 hours 39 minutes as this was under my 5 hour target. The hardest part of the marathon was between 20 and 24 miles. I knew I could achieve 20 miles so that kept me going. There wasn’t a time when I thought I wouldn’t finish. I just remember thinking the final 6 miles could take a while to complete. My brother travelled down from London where he lives and my parents and my sister were all supporting me trying to stay ahead of me stopping where they could along the canal to cheer me on. The organiser had also put together an app with audio commentary for every mile which was so motivating. The commentary consisted of various London milestones reached, history of the marathon and when to take on food and drink during the race. I missed having all the crowds to cheer me on however having my family stopping at regular points cheering me on definitely kept me going strong. It also helped coming across other marathon runners coming the other way. Lots of encouragement was exchanged. As this was the longest run I have ever taken part in I was definitely praying before and during the run for God to give me the strength to get through which really helped. After getting dropped off back at my flat I sat down for quite a while, sorted myself out and later that evening went round to my parents for Sunday dinner which I very much enjoyed. I am amazed at how much I have raised so far and would like to say thank you to everyone who has sponsored me. At the time of writing my total stands at £2821.20. I really like the work Cord do as they give a voice to local people and communities. Cord’s ability to meet local people and communities to build relationships between them and their government to resolve issues is truly inspirational.
